The Brands Stepping Up With Post-Op Bras For Breast Cancer Survivors

So important in the recovery process

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month – and for many recovering from cancer, adjusting to their new normal can be a struggle.

Understandably, that postoperative period can be a difficult time. Luckily a lot of brands are stepping up in recent years and acknowledging that the needs of women post operation may be different to everyone else.

Whether you have recently gone through a full mastectomy, a breast augmentation or any other breast related procedure you may want to switch to a post operative bra.

These can greatly reduce any pain or discomfort after surgery in ways a regular bra might not.

Irish brand Roches explains why you should consider investing in this type of bra. “These bras have no seams, tags or wires that might irritate sensitive skin, scars or wounds. Also, you will enjoy a good night’s sleep, which is essential for your recovery,” they say.

According to their website, the benefits of a post-op bra include:

  • Front-openings for ease of movement
  • Protect sensitive tissue
  • Reduce stress on incisions or wounds
  • Reduce the chance of swelling within the breast
  • Promote the healing process
  • Front opening for ease of opening if movement is restricted
  • Convenient for doctor’s check-ups
  • Option to attach a drain pouch. This stops your drains from catching and pulling if left hanging

Marks & Spencer is another brand that is committed to making bras for individuals “embarking on or amid their post-surgery journey”.

The high street shop has continued to improve their line which they have built since the early 2000s by listening to what customers suggest, including creating sexier and more feminine styles.

Products within the range include some bestselling favourites, such as the Cami and Body Soft bra and the Post-Surgery Pocket. A nationwide BrafitTM is available which is provided by trained BrafitTM experts. This will allow you to find the perfect size for you.

M&S’s full post-surgery collection is available now on their website, with a smaller edit available across selected stores.

If you are in search of a more affordable option, Penneys has also jumped on the bandwagon with a couple of post operative bras hitting their shelves.

These bras consist of a zipper going up the front for convenience, a soft stretch infused fabric and no wires. They also include an internal pocket for breast prostheses.
