The Theme For This Year’s Met Gala Is ‘Camp’ and Harry Styles and Lady Gaga Are Co-Chairs
We are intrigued!
The first Monday in May is very nearly upon us, and we’ll be getting the popcorn ready, and making sure our phones are fully charged for the all the Instagram refreshing we’ll be doing for the 2019 Met Gala.
With just days to go, we’re taking a look as some of the details including the theme.
Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay Notes on Camp is the inspiration behind this year’s theme, Camp: Notes On Fashion. The essay explored the idea of camp being ‘love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.’ So before you start thinking about tents and tin plates, it’s the other kind of camp.
Chosen by Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute where the Met Gala is held because he ‘felt it would have a lot of cultural resonance’.
Over the past few years we’ve seen themes like ‘Heavenly Bodies’ which had a Catholic influence, and prompted Ariana to wear that angelic Sistine Chapel-inspired gown last year.
We also saw Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo being honoured with the 2018 theme, which featured Riri in her incredible petal explosion.
We’re buzzing to see what these gals and the others will be wearing that ties in with the camp theme.
Every year Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour hand picks some celebs to help her co-chair the event, and this time around it’s Harry Styles, Lady Gaga and Serena Williams and Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele.
Previous co-chairs included Beyoncé, Rihanna, Amal Clooney and Marc Jacobs!
We can’t wait!
