Wait, Are Almond Nails Cheugy?

Excuse me?

Being a millennial can be tough sometimes.

We’re chastised for our pauses, our cut creases, our texting style. Our music taste is criticised, our old Facebook posts laughed at.

We spend a lot of our time trying to appease Gen Z; sharing their TikToks, adhering to their trends, desperately trying to exist in an online world that has all but passed us by.

But if there’s one thing we won’t give up, it’s our almond shaped nails.

Anyone as addicted as I am to a good mani knows all too well the key nail shapes you will be asked to choose between when seated in the salon: round, square, oval, stiletto, squoval, coffin, lipstick, and of course, almond.

A perfect blend of round with a sharper edge, almond nails have been around since the ’90s, a time when they became the ideal shape for press-on nails and acrylics.

The nail is long enough to allow for a gorgeous tip, ombre, or other designs, while still giving your hand a dainty bit of glamour.

Not as severe as coffin, not as classic as round, almond nails have long been the key way to give your fingers a bit of length without compromising on your ability to open doors and apply skincare.

Now, however, it appears as though almond nails aren’t cool anymore. In fact, they’re cheugy. If cheugy is still a thing that people say.

According to TikTok (where else?), almond nails are surefire proof that you’re a millennial, because younger generations are now opting to wear their nails shorter.

Goodbye extensions and nail art for days, because Gen Z are now keeping their nails short with minimal colour and designs.

We’re talking round shape, a thin tip, and a muted pastel or natural look.

Boring? Who said that?

But if you’re like me and not in a position to give up your almond shape just yet, never fear – because you don’t have to.

Trends come and go, and if the sheer amount of things Gen Z have been fawning over the past few months is anything to go by, they’ll be into something else in no time.

And all attention will be off us millennials, and our era defining nails.
