Have you heard about the skincare ingredient ectoin? If you are anything like me, probably not until very recently.

Well, it’s predicted to be one of 2025’s biggest skincare trend and might just be about to replace some of your everyday skincare favourites.

Here’s why.

What is ectoin?

Ectoin is found in some of the world’s most hostile environments such as the depths of the ocean or the desert. Its function here is to protect the organisms and plants that live in such harsh conditions. It does this by providing them with a protective layer which allows the organisms to survive.

You can probably see where this is heading. If ectoin has the power to protect living organisms in the harshest conditions in the world, it can probably do the same for us, and skin care experts are here to confirm.

Who should use it?

Well based on the benefits, it’s clear that the majority of people could benefit from ectoin being added to their skincare regimen. Particularly if you have dehydrated skin or a compromised skin barrier.

If you have oily or acne-prone skin you’re in luck as ectoin is super hydrating however is not greasy at all and therefore can’t clog your pores.

How to incorporate ectoin into your skincare routine:

Whatever product containing ectoin that you want to add into your routine, just use it as normal. If you opt for a moisturiser with the ingredient, use it after you have cleansed and toned, and the same with any other product.
