How To Create A Birthday Party To Remember In Lockdown

STELLAR intern Brian L Cummins chats about pulling out all the stops to give his mom a 40th birthday to remember!

Birthdays are a special celebration to us all, and although lockdown has taken away some of the fun, with no guests, no venues, and so, the list goes on, you can still make the most of it and make yours – or someone else’s lockdown birthday something to remember.

Taking inspiration from my mother, Samantha Lennon who recently celebrated her 40th birthday in lockdown— and what a fabulous one it was, here are some of the things we did (and you can too!) to make it a birthday to remember.

Dress up

You may only be sitting in your living room with your household, but that doesn’t mean you can’t dress up!

Feel special and treat yourself. After all, it’s your big day!

Samantha tells us:

“It felt special to get glammed up. It made the celebration more real, more normal. Also, seeing my husband and kids all dressed up for the first time in over a year felt special, and we got some great family photographs”.

Decorate as much as you can

The decor is there for you to enjoy and although you don’t have any guests coming over, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth pulling out all the stops when it comes to celebrating you.

Change your house around, rejig the place, and turn your gaff into the venue. Plus, there are so many fab Irish businesses worth supporting.

Supporting Irish businesses

Here are some of the businesses that helped to cater for my mom’s party at home.

Lovin Letters

This business gives you the rental of beautiful letters or numbers for any occasion. So if it’s your big day, not only will you be supporting local businesses, but also treating yourself to spectacular decor that’ll certainly make for the prefect photo backdrop.

Balloon HQ

This business is Kildare based, and are Ireland’s leading supplier of branded balloon decor. They have fantastic and unique balloon decor to fit any birthday theme. If you’re not Kildare-based, don’t worry, they have a nationwide service!

Samantha’s husband supported both of these businesses when surprising her for her birthday, and it’s safe to say she was thrilled. “I did not expect such unique decorations. The house looked absolutely beautiful, I was shocked. I’ve never had a birthday at home before that was as special as this one.”

Sweet Cicely

Samantha explains that she was surprised with an afternoon tea set from Sweet Cicely that was filled with fantastic food and treats. A great unique way to surprise someone on their big day.

Sweet Cicely are Dublin based and collection only.

RHK Cocktails

Delivering nationwide, there’s no reason not to treat yourself to some professional cocktails. I mean, we’ve missed the experience of a nice night filled with the sweet and flavourful drinks, so bring them to your home!

“It really felt like I was in a normal function room celebrating. The food, the cake, the drinks, they were all top notch.”

Flowers Direct

A fantastic way to make somebody feel that little bit more special is, of course, flowers. Who doesn’t love flowers?

SmarTees Designs

Personalised pyjamas, personalised photos turned into jigsaws, and so, so much more. This is unique, unexpected and positively going to make somebody feel extremely special.

”I couldn’t be happier with everything that was put in place that day. It was truly a birthday to remember and I have my fantastic family to thank for that. Every single little detail was thought of and I wouldn’t change a thing,” added Samantha.

The little gestures certainly go a long way.
