Flying Soon? You Better Not Fall Asleep During Take-Off Or Landing!

The reason has nothing to do with the safety demonstration (though that's important too...)

Bridesmaids on a plane

Some of us see flight time as an excellent opportunity to nap. Sure what else would you be doing in the sky, right?

But it turns out we shouldn’t be so quick to fall asleep up there. Experts have said that we shouldn’t nod off until the plane reaches its optimal altitude, because our bodies can’t cope as well with changing cabin pressure when we’re asleep compared to when we’re awake.

Worst case scenario? You could seriously damage your eardrums.

Boots pharmacist, Angela Chalmers, told Express.co.uk, “A quick change in altitude affects the air pressure in the ear. This leads to a vacuum in the Eustachian tubes which makes the ears feel blocked and sound dull.

“Try not to sleep during take-off and descent as you will not be swallowing as frequently and this can lead to blocked ears.”

Consider yourselves warned, folks.
