Hypothalamic amenorrhea is a condition which causes a women’s menstrual cycle to stop and it’s vital to know what the symptoms are and how to spot them.
What is hypothalamic amenorrhea?
Hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) is a condition where a woman’s menstrual cycle stops due to an issue with a certain part of the brain called the hypothalamus.
According to Cleveland Clinic, the hypothalamus acts as the control centre of the brain – “it regulates many bodily responses such as your temperature, hunger and certain aspects of reproduction.”
The hypothalamus also produces a hormone called gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) which works with other hormones, to produce a menstrual cycle. However, certain factors can cause the hypothalamus to limit the production of GnRH causing a reduction in the release of hormones. This can result in a missed or irregular period.
Hypothalamic amenorrhea is a type of secondary amenorrhea. This means you previously had a regular menstrual cycle, but now, have not had a period for three or more months .
What causes hypothalamic amenorrhea?
There are many factors as to why your hypothalamus may stop releasing hormones. These can include emotional or psychological stress, not eating enough food, food restriction or excessive exercise.
A menstrual cycle may also stop due to having a low body fat, poor nutrition or having an eating disorder.
What are the symptoms of hypothalamic amenorrhea?
Not having a period for 3 or more months is the most common symptom of hypothalamic amenorrhea.ย You may also experience further symptoms such as low energy, hunger, anxiety, depression or issues with sleep, due to the body’s hormonal imbalance.
Other symptoms may include vaginal dryness, low sex drive, hair loss or headaches.
What are the treatments for hypothalamic amenorrhea?
The main treatment for hypothalamic amenorrhea is lifestyle changes. This may involve limiting excessive amounts of exercise, finding ways to reduce stress or gaining weight.
In certain instances talking to a dietician may be advised. This is to understand what nutrients are needed to fuel the body correctly.
If you think you are suffering from symptoms of hypothalamic amenorrhea, then contact your local GP and book in for an appointment.
