Nicola Coughlan is the star of two of our favourite shows on the planet. Not only does she play the hilarious Clare Devlin in Derry Girls, but her role as Penelope Featherington has further catapulted her into global fame.

So let’s get to know our fave star a little better.

Here are 10 things you probably didn’t know…

She’s From Galway

Despite her wide-ranging accepts from Derry Girls to Bridgerton, Nicola is a Galway girl! She grew up in Oranmore.

She’s BFFs with Queer Eye’s JVN 

Okay, you’d have to not be following either of them on social media to not know this. If so, why not?! go and follow them right now! It all started in 2018 when Nicola had a hoodie with Jonathan Van Ness’s face on it. He slid into her DMs and they have basically been BFFs ever since.

Speaking of best friends, she’s super close to Claudia Jessie from Bridgerton too

Nicola has said that one of the best part of filming Bridgerton was working with Claudia who played Eloise.

“Hopefully the series continues because being able to work with her more would be just wonderful,” she told us here at STELLAR.

Her style icon is Mary-Kate Olsen

Nicola has revealed that Mary-Kate Olsen is her style icon. Speaking specifically about when MK went to NYU, she told Stellar: “I just thought she looked so cool, there was lots of layering and hoodies and rings.”
Nicola is quite the stylish gal herself having shown us multiple glam looks over the past few months, even when it’s for zoom or virtual premieres.

She has two siblings

Nicola has a big brother called Kieran who is 16 years older than her, and a sister called Clodagh.

Nicola is a Capricorn

The actress was born on January 9th 1987, which makes her 34. This is something that surprises many fans because she’s play roles of pretty young characters in Derry Girls and Bridgerton. This also means she’s a Capricorn, which would make her ambitious and realistic.

She speaks up for what she believes in

As we all should! Nicola was very vocal in the lead up to the 2015 Marriage Equality referendum. She often uses her large social platforms to talk about LGBTQ+ rights, racism and many more important causes. We stan an activist actor!

She’s a Supermacs stan

As a Galway girl, we can’t be surprised that Nicola loves the chips from the Galway-based chain. “I love Curry Chips more than I can explain,” she said previously in a tweet about smacs.

She also LOVES Hamilton

Like many of us, Nicola is obsessed with Hamilton and has been lucky enough to see the show 3 times! She has also said that one of her career highlights is that Hamilton creator Lin Manuel Miranda watched Derry Girls.

Nicola lived in Malta at 19

Nicola has spoken on various podcasts and in interviews about her year she spent in Malta. The actress got to do an Erasmus when she studied English and Classics. She has said it was one of the best years of her life.
