The Witch
The Witch was directed by Robert Eggers in 2016 and stars Anya Taylor Joy, Ralph Ineson and Katie Dickie. The film is set in 17th century New England and follows the storyline of a banished Puritan family on their farm. The family soon realise that the forest they live beside has unknown sinister forces of witchcraft. The Witch is a terrifying adaptation of old folktales and will keep you up at night with its thrilling scenes.

Moonlight
Moonlight is an Academy Award winning movie starring Mahershala Ali, Trevante Rhodes, Ashton Sanders and directed by Barry Jenkins. The 2016 film follows the storyline of a young, queer, black man, Chriron, who is coming to terms with his sexuality. Chrion seeks guidance in Juan, a drug dealer who leaves a profound impression on his life.

Lady Bird is a coming of age movie directed by Greta Gerwig in 2017. Starring Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf and Timothée Chalamet, the movie follows the story of Christine, also known as Lady Bird. Lady Bird is struggling with the relationship she has with her mother, men in her life and her best friend. This film is full of complex relationships, teenage mistakes and figuring out your path in life.

Hereditary is one of Ari Aster’s most successful movies starring Toni Collette, Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro. The psychological thriller follows the storyline of Annie whose mother has recently passed away. Since her passing unfortunate and sinister events have been happening to the family. Soon Annie realises it is her family tree that is causing these events. Hereditary is a film that will leave you at the edge of your seat.

Midsommar
Another Ari Aster masterpiece is his 2019 film Midsommar starring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, Will Poulter and William Jackson Harper. The film follows the storyline of Dani who has suffered psychologically after the death of multiple family members. Dani alongside her boyfriend and other acquaintances decide to go to a friend’s ancestral commune in the hope to leave her stress behind. Instead they are faced with an unexpected group and abnormal traditions that will completely change their lives.

Aftersun
Aftersun is a loosely based account of director Charlotte Wells last holiday with her father when she was a child. The movie follows a young father Calum, played by Paul Mescal, and his eleven-year-old daughter Sophie, played by Frankie Corio, who are on holiday in Turkey. Throughout the movie we see Calum is in an extremely depressive mindset and is trying to hold it together for his daughter. This movie is a beautiful raw portrayal of what it is like to live with depression and the repercussions it can have on their loved ones.

Past Lives
Celine Song’s directorial debut Past Lives is a must-see, gut-wrenching film following a love triangle between Nora, Hae Sung and Arthur. The movie stars Greta Lee, Teo Yoo and John Maga. Throughout the movie we see Nora’s current life in New York City where she reconnects with an old childhood friend she had when she lived in Seoul, Hae Sung. The story follows Nora’s reconnection with Hae Sung and shows flashbacks throughout her life from childhood to meeting her now husband Arthur.

Uncut Gems
Adam Sandler stars as a greedy, sleezy jewellery salesman in Benny and Josh Safdie’s 2019 Uncut Gems. Alongside Sandler is Julia Fox, LaKeith Stanfield and many more. The storyline follows Howard Ratner who has severe gambling problems. Howard makes a life changing bet that could ruin his life. The film is a suspenseful story that shows Howard’s struggle to balance his business, family life and pleasures.

Released in 2019, Waves starring Kelvin Harrison Jr., Taylor Russell and Alexa Demi is split into two parts from two different perspectives. The first is Tyler’s perspective and focuses on his relationship with Alexis. After Tyler suffers a tragic loss the perspective turns to his sister Emily. The movie is an emotional rollercoaster of a family who are trying to navigate their emotions, forgiveness and relationships.

Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of Queer released last December and starred Drew Starkey and Daniel Craig. The movie is set in 1950s Mexico and is centred around two queer men Eugene and William Lee. The storyline follows Lee, an American on his own in Mexico, and the relationship he finds himself in with a younger former soldier, Eugene. This erotic drama explores themes of sexuality, loneliness and adventure.

Babygirl
Babygirl is an erotic thriller following an affair between Romy, played by Nicole Kidman, and Samuel, played by Harris Dickinson. Samuel is much younger than Romy and is an intern to Romy’s company where she is CEO. Their relationship is dominating and submissive and all about Romy coming to terms with the unspoken and repressed pleasures of her body.

Close
In 2022 Lukas Dhont’s French and Dutch movie Close was released starring Eden Lambrine, Gustav de Waele and Igor van Dessel. The story is loosely based off of Dhont’s own experience and follows the lives of two thirteen year old boys Léo and Rémis. The two boys have a very close relationship at school and outside of school in the flower fields where their parents pick the harvest. One of the boys classmates eludes that the boys’ friendship is sexual which causes a drastic impact on their lives.

Pearl, X and MaXXXine
Ti West’s Pearl, X and MaXXXine franchise are a trilogy of movies starring Mia Goth. Each of the leading women, all played by Goth, are seeking fame in their lives and are willing to do anything to get there. The three movies are set over three different time periods 1918, 1970s and 1980s. The movies are both thrilling and terrifying and are a much watch trilogy.

The Lighthouse
Robert Eggers’ 2019 film The Lighthouse starred Willem Da Foe and Robert Pattinson. The two main characters, Thomas Wake and Emphraim Winslow, are two lighthouse keepers on a remote island. Emphraim goes to the island to assist Thomas, his elderly supervisor. While on his trip there, Emphraim begins to have scary and unusual visions. This movie is an amazing psychological horror and thriller shot in black and white set in New England in the 1890s.

mid90s
Directed by Jonah Hill in 2018, mid90s is set in Los Angeles in the 1990s and has a wide cast starring Sunny Suljic, Olan Prenatt, Lucas Hedges and Ryder McLaughlin. The film is centred around thirteen year old Stevie who finds himself spending his summer around a group of older teenagers he meets at a skate shop to escape his conflict filled home life. The film is a coming of age story where young Stevie learns difficult lessons about race, class and privilege.

Academy Award winning film, Everything Everywhere All At Once, starring Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu and Jamie Lee Curtis was released in 2022 and gained tremendous success. The movie follows a Chinese immigrant family who own a laundry mat. The main character Evelyn is brought on a journey where she enters many different parallel universes and sees how her life would have turned out if she went down different routes. Evelyn’s goal throughout the movie is to stop someone who intends to destroy the multiverse. This movie is full of action, romance, fantasy and is the perfect watch for anyone and everyone.

Hot Summer Nights was released in 2017 starring Timothée Chalamet, Maika Monroe and Alex Roe. The movie follows the story of Daniel, an innocent teenager who is spending his summer in Cape Cod. Daniel’s innocence soon starts to fade when he begins making money by selling pot to a rough crowd. While pushing drugs Daniel is also trying to balance a new relationship with McKayla, his business partner’s sister.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer is a 2017 mystery horror starring Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan and Nicole Kidman. Steven Murphy is a surgeon who has grown close to an awkward teenage boy, Martin. Steven and his wife, Anna, take Martin under their wing however, they soon realise that Martin has some extremely sinister qualities about him and has an agenda for Steven and his family.

The Florida Project
Starring Willem DaFoe, Bria Vinaite and Brooklyn Prince, The Florida Project is an indie drama following the life of Moonee, a six year old girl who lives with her single mother near Disneyland. Moonee, along with a few of her friends, spends her summer stealing from and pranking arriving tourists while her mother is struggling financially. Throughout the movie we see Moonee’s mother, Halley, and the hotel’s manager, Bobby, try their best to keep Moonee’s innocence intact.
