One Day – we laughed, we cried (we’re still crying) and we’d do it all over again! Emma and Dexter had us glued to our screens for 14 heart wrenching episodes and we loved every minute of it.
If like us you’re a sucker for a friends to lovers love story, then you’ve come to the right place.
We’ve complied a list of 5 of the best friends to lovers films to watch once you’re recovered from One Day and need another tearjerker.
1. Love, Rosie
Love, Rosie is the perfect film to watch after One Day as it has a similar story line… only it won’t leave you in tears.
The film follows childhood best friends Alex and Roise who do everything together. There has always been a spark between the two of them, but they never admit it and when they do it’s never the right time.
Love, Rosie is all about loving the right person at the wrong time and just like Emma and Dexter, it takes them years to get it right.
2. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before
This one is a ‘childhood friends to not talking for a while to lovers’, kind of like Dex and Em minus the fake dating.
Main character Lara Jean writes love letters to all the guys she likes, for her eyes only, to help her move past her crushes.
Then to her horror, her younger sister mails all the letters to each boy including her older sister’s boyfriend. So, in an attempt to avoid her sister’s boyfriend, Lara Jean employs her former childhood friend Peter to fake date… and we all know that in romcom land, fake dating always leads to more.
Now this film is part of a trilogy, but the first one is, in our opinion the best.
3. When Harry Met Sally
When Harry Met Sally is a classic friends to lovers film and is definitely a must watch.
After graduating from the University of Chicago, Harry and Sally share a ride to New York.
During the journey the pair get to know each other but they go their separate ways in New York and have no intention of seeing each other again.
Fast forward 10 years, Harry and Sally finally decide to become friends and grow closer each day until they finally admit their feelings for each other.
Like One Day, this film follows the protagonists throughout their lives and various relationships until they (spoilers) finally get together.
4. Made Of Honour
Patrick Dempsey stars in this friends to lovers film as a playboy who falls in love with his best friend.
Like Em and Dex, Tom and Hannah have been best friends since college. Hannah likes to stay single so she can focus on her career while Tom likes to sleep with a different girl every week.
However, when Hannah has to go away to Scotland for a six-week work trip, Tom is all alone and realises that he is in fact in love with her.
But things have changed for Hannah when she comes back, and Tom might have missed his chance for a happy ending… or maybe not – but we’re not spoiling anything!
5. Friends With Benefits
Jamie Rellis and Dylan Harper meet at GQ and decide to become pals.
One night they decide that sex doesn’t need to require any emotional attachment and they become friends with benefits. However, after overhearing Dylan tell his family that Jamie is too damaged for him, she ends their relationship.
Will this pair be able to make it beyond the FWB status? Only time will tell.
