A Taste Of Home And Community At The Dean Berlin
Immediately books another flight...
You might already know The Dean for its stylish hotels in Dublin, Cork and Galway, but did you know the Irish hospitality brand recently made its German debut with the opening of The Dean Berlin?
A staple of contemporary Irish hospitality, The Dean has built a reputation for blending bold design, creative collaborations and vibrant cultural programming. Staying true to its roots, the brand brings its signature sense of community and laid-back luxury to the heart of Berlin, creating a space that feels as welcoming as it is design-forward.
I was lucky enough to experience it for myself recently. Tucked away in Charlottenburg, one of Berlin’s most characterful neighbourhoods, The Dean Berlin feels perfectly at home among the area’s mix of history, culture and creativity.
Designed by Rachael Gowdridge, the hotel is set inside a beautifully restored late-19th-century building and strikes a thoughtful balance between old and new, pairing original architectural features with bold colours, sculptural lighting and contemporary design. It’s stylish without feeling intimidating, capturing Berlin’s artistic spirit while maintaining the warm, welcoming feel that The Dean is known for.
With 81 rooms, there’s a style to suit every type of traveller. Whether you’re after a cosy room for a solo city break, a classic double, a spacious studio for friends or family, or one of the hotel’s balcony suites, there’s plenty of choice depending on your needs. I stayed in one of the Large Balcony Rooms, and it struck the perfect balance between style and comfort.
There was plenty of space to relax, with a cosy double bed, a dining table and chairs, a tea and coffee station, generous wardrobe space and a beautifully designed en-suite stocked with luxurious DS & Durga toiletries.
Thoughtful details like soft lighting, clever storage and rich, textured interiors made the room feel both luxurious and genuinely inviting. The real highlight, though, was the private balcony, a peaceful spot where I enjoyed a morning coffee and fresh treats from the in-house bakery before heading out to explore the city.
It’s also clear that art is a real pillar of The Dean Berlin. Everywhere you look, there’s something that catches your eye, making the hotel feel less like a place to sleep and more like an extension of Berlin’s creative scene.
The original features of the building have been beautifully preserved, while bold design choices, colourful interiors and striking lighting give the space a contemporary edge.
Add in the thoughtfully curated collection of artwork by German-based artists, and it genuinely feels as though you’re staying inside a gallery. I found myself slowing down to take in the details as I wandered from one space to the next.
At the heart of the hotel then, is the Benedict, the all-day bakery, restaurant and bar that’s something of an institution in Berlin. Popular with both locals and visitors, it’s easy to see why people queue for a table, especially at weekends. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, with the smell of freshly baked bread and coffee filling the space from early morning right through until late at night. The good news? As a hotel guest, you don’t have to worry about joining the queue.
Breakfast quickly became one of my favourite parts of the stay. One morning I tucked into a delicious avocado and egg bagel, while the next I opted for a buttery breakfast croissant, both paired with excellent coffee and one of the Benedict’s refreshing juices, a welcome treat in the Berlin summer heat.
With everything from fluffy pancakes and signature egg dishes to homemade pastries baked in-house, it’s the kind of place that makes you want to linger a little longer before heading out to explore the city.
Speaking of which, the hotel itself is just a short 10-minute walk from famous Kurfürstendamm (or Ku’damm), the city’s premier shopping boulevard, lined with everything from luxury designer boutiques and flagship high-street stores to cafés and restaurants. So whether you’re planning a shopping spree or simply fancy soaking up the atmosphere, it’s an easy place to while away an afternoon.
And if you’re keen to continue the creative thread that runs through the hotel, you’ll also find the renowned photography and visual arts centre C/O Berlin just a 20-minute walk away. It’s well worth a visit, with a constantly changing programme of exhibitions from some of the biggest names in photography and contemporary visual culture, making it the perfect addition to a stay that celebrates Berlin’s artistic spirit.
When it comes to dinner plans, I’d highly recommend making the short 20-minute stroll to Bottega Seppel. The walk itself is a lovely way to soak up more of Charlottenburg, passing leafy streets, independent cafés and beautiful architecture before arriving at this cosy neighbourhood gem.
Part wine bar, part restaurant, Bottega Seppel has a relaxed, intimate atmosphere that makes it the kind of place where you plan to stay for one glass of wine and end up lingering all evening.
We opted for the tasting menu, which was a fantastic way to sample the kitchen’s seasonal cooking. Highlights included beautifully fresh prawns, crispy arancini, creamy whipped ricotta and an excellent beef tartare. Dessert was equally memorable, with a rich chocolate mousse and an indulgent rum cake providing the perfect ending to the meal.
More than anything, though, it was the people who made the stay so memorable. Every member of staff I encountered was genuinely warm, welcoming and happy to share recommendations, creating the kind of atmosphere that makes you feel at home from the moment you arrive. In a city known for its creativity and character, The Dean Berlin captures both while adding a touch of Irish hospitality that sets it apart.
