An Australian Politician Is Being Applauded For Breastfeeding Her Daughter In Parliament
Parliamentary rules were changed last year to allow mothers to feed their children in the chamber.
An Australian politician is being commended for breastfeeding her daughter while speaking in the Senate Chamber in Canberra today.
Senator Larissa Waters of the Greens Party was nursing her 14-week-old daughter, Alia Joy, while simultaneously putting forward a motion about black lung disease.
Australian parliamentary rules were changed last year to allow mothers to feed their children in the chamber, and last month, Larissa made history when she became the first politician to breastfeed in parliament.
Earlier today, she took to Twitter to say, “First time I’ve had to move a Senate motion while breastfeeding! And my partner in crime moved her own motion just before mine, bless her”.

Women across the world have been applauding Larissa, saying that it’s not easy to be a working mum and juggle childcare with a career. One person wrote, “You’re my role model. It’s so scary to stand up and be vulnerable but you’re out there kicking ass ? “. Many agree, and think she’s doing the right thing by trying to ‘normalise’ breastfeeding in public.
