Awkward Face Or Extreme Smiley? Everyone’s Confused About This Emoji’s Meaning

It’s barely been a week since we found out that the sassy pink emoji lady wasn’t so sassy after all, and now we’ve been served up another dose of emoji realness.

Apparently the above emoji – the one that’s either an awkward grimace or a huge smile – has been causing quite a bit of confusion.

So much so, in fact, that one PhD student has taken it upon herself to find out the truth. Hannah Miller from the University of Minnesota, has been investigating the Great Emoji Debate, and discovered that it’s all down to which device you’re using to write texts.

While on an iPhone, the face looks more stern than happy, on an Android it appears as a big cheeky grin.

Confusing, much? And the situation only gets worse if you’re texting someone who uses a different device to you, as Hannah displayed:
