Rly?! Sarah Jessica Parker Just Described Giving Birth As ‘Total Euphoria’
She'd happily relive it.
Though I have yet to give birth myself, I’m aware the experience is going to be somewhat hellish. I’ve heard the horror stories. I’ve watched the questionable YouTube videos. Childbirth is a miracle, for sure, but it’s not always pretty.
However if Sarah Jessica Parker is to be believed, the whole birthing experience is great craic. And who knows, maybe it is?
Speaking to Net-A-Porter’s The Edit magazine ahead of the launch of her capsule shoe collaboration, SJP said childbirth was the one moment of her life she’d love to revisit. Although she has three children – James, 14 and seven-year-old twins Marion and Tabitha, the actress has only given birth once, as she welcomed her daughters via surrogate.
So enamoured was Sarah Jessica with the process of giving birth that she talks about it regularly, much to the annoyance of her teenage son. “James is like, why do you always want to talk about that?! I’m like, because it’s the greatest!” she says.
“There is this suspended animation around [birth]: everything goes away; the entire world is sucked up; time suspends. It’s just you and, in my case, my husband, and this child, and it’s absolute euphoria.”
Speaking to Vogue back in 2010, the actress said that welcoming meeting her daughters for the first time after her surrogate gave birth was “extraordinary and amazing,” but that the nine months leading up to the day was somewhat tough.
“I think the biggest thing is you can’t celebrate something that is potentially filled with joy, nor can you share fears and worries about every checkup, you know—the sixteen-week checkup, the amnio, the this, the that… And the waiting is different, the whole nine months. We couldn’t talk about the fact that we were having children to anybody for soooo long. All the stuff that matters is secretive and worrisome.”
