Journalist Zara King will be exploring the troubling world of medical tourism for her new documentary, To Die For: Cosmetic Surgery in Turkey.

Every year, thousands of Irish people travel to Turkey to undergo cosmetic surgery, and tragically – some never come home. Zara’s Virgin Media News documentary explores the troubling world of medical tourism, meeting with people whose lives have been irrecoverably changed by ‘botched’ surgeries.

From ‘Turkey teeth’ to tummy tucks and everything in between, Zara travels to one of Turkey’s most popular clinics to investigate the rising number of people travelling from Ireland to Turkey for medical and cosmetic procedures.

Worrying figures come hand in hand with these surgeries taking place in Turkey, with the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, citing that since 2020, his department has seen 12 very serious cases, including 9 Irish deaths abroad and 3 people with medical complications arising out of mainly bariatric and dental surgery.

Zara will be asking the important questions like why are Irish citizens choosing to go under the knife in Turkey each year? How does it work? And who’s responsible if it all goes wrong?

Watch ‘To Die For: Cosmetic Surgery in Turkey’ tonight at 10pm on Virgin Media One and Virgin Media Player.
