Everything We Know So Far About The Small Things Like These Film Adaptation
It's coming this year.
It’s been a big year for Cillian Murphy – and this year, we’ve got another one of his films to look forward to.
Adapted from Claire Keegan’s gorgeous, tender novel of the same name, Small Things Like These is officially set for release later in 2024.
Here’s everything we know so far about the movie.
When is it out?
Last week, Berlin Film Festival announced that Small Things Like These will premiere at the festival this year.
The film will premiere on February 15th, screening in Competition.
The first look of the film was shared last week, and shows Cillian walking down an empty street with a case in hand.
It was filmed in Ireland last year, in New Ross in Wexford – you can check out some of the behind the scenes shots below.
What’s it about?
Small Things Like These is based on a book of the same name written by Claire Keegan.
The novel is set during the weeks leading up to Christmas 1985 in New Ross, where we meet our main character, Bill Furlong, a coal merchant and family man who is preparing for his busiest season.
While delivering an order to the local convent one morning, Bill makes a discovery which forces him to confront both his past as well as a society that is controlled by the church.

Who else is in it?
Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley and Emily Watson also appear in the film, with Cillian playing Bill.
Announcing the premiere Berlinale’s Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian said: “‘With Small Things Like These’, Tim Mielants tells the story of a man of few words, with wide open eyes, as clear as the skies of Ireland.
“We are confident that this story that allies the kindness to be directed to the more fragile, and the willpower to stand up against injustice, will resonate with everyone.
“We are looking forward to launching this ‘quiet’ yet quite exceptional film at the start of Zeitgeist Irland 24, a year-long celebration of Irish culture in Germany.”
