Is somebody gonna match my freak? (read Stellar articles and gossip about celebs daily)
If you’ve been keeping up with social media recently, you may have heard a song with the lyrics: “Is somebody gonna match my freak?” This song, called Nasty, comes from R&B artist Tinashe.
While she’s blowing up now, thanks to this viral hit, she has actually been in the music industry for 17 years.
Here is everything you need about Tinashe’s career and the origins of Nasty.
Who is Tinashe?
Tinashe (pronounced Tee-naw-shay) is a 31-year-old singer-songwriter, dancer and actress. She was born in Kentucky but moved to California as a child where she began pursuing a career in the entertainment industry.
She started acting as a child in the early 2000s. Between 2003 and 2009, she had a few roles on various TV shows and films, including doing some of the motion capture in The Polar Express. She also had a recurring role on Two and a Half Men.

During her time on Two and a Half Men, she began focusing on her music career when she became a member of the girl group The Stunners in 2007. The group split in 2011 after only releasing one EP and opening for Justin Bieber’s My World Tour.
Post-split, Tinashe began focusing on her own music and hit a winner when she released her debut single, 2 On, featuring Schoolboy Q in 2014. To this day, it is still one of her most popular hits.
Later that year, she put out her first album, Aquarius, with record label RCA. It had a pop and R&B sound. She made several music videos that showcased her dancing talent.
She would become more mainstream in 2015 when her collaboration with Snakehips and Chance The Rapper, All My Friends, came out. She also put out a few singles of her own that year.
Since 2015, she has put out seven albums, including a Christmas album. She has collaborated with big names like Britney Spears, Calvin Harris and Nick Jonas.

She has done four headline tours and opened for Maroon 5, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry and Flume.
In 2019, she left her record label to become an independent artist.
The Origin of Nasty
In April this year, Tinashe released Nasty. Named after her nickname, Nasty Nashe, she came up with the viral line “Is somebody gonna match my freak?” while freestyling in her car on the way to a recording studio.
Along with producer Ricky Reed, they came up with a melodic hook and chanty verses to create a song that has “two different moods” according to a YouTube video they did for Variety explaining the song.
She was also conscious of making a song that she could dance to, as it is a very important part of her live performances. Pretty much all her music videos and live performances feature her dancing.
The Popularity of the Nasty Girl Dance Trend
Like many other songs that are currently blowing up, Nasty’s popularity grew from going viral on social media.
It first started when a TikTok user, who goes by the username @nates.vibe, posted a video of himself doing the wine, a Jamaican dance move where you rotate your hips in a circular motion, to a reggae song.
@nates.vibe And just like that… Carnival Done… • Freedom Jouvert was amazing.! • #freedomjouvert #carnival #trinidadcarnival #2023 #freedomjouvert2023 #dance #collaboration #dancers #soca #welovesoca #socaislife #socaiseverything #wesupportsoca #celebration #culture #blind #heychoppi #friendscandance #socavibe #portofspain #vibes #dancevibes #trinidadandtobago @SHEEKZ/DEFINEME ♬ Blind – Hey Choppi
An X user who goes by @grrussome then took parts of @nates.vibe’s video and changed the original song to Nasty, proving to work perfectly for the dance moves.

The video started gaining traction and has now amassed over 10 million views.
Many TikTok users began to recreate @nates.vibe’s dance moves with the song Nasty playing, and it has become one of the biggest dance trends on the app right now.
Of course, Tinashe herself has hopped on the trend too.

Is Somebody Gonna Match My Freak? The Internet’s Most Relatable Trend Right Now
While the Nasty Dance is going viral on TikTok, so is the line “Is somebody gonna match my freak?” from the song’s first verse.
While it may have a certain kind of connotation, the line is actually going viral because people are using it to describe specific things you do that you hope a partner or friend would relate to.
