There comes a time in meme culture when a viral sensation is so universally adored, so breathtakingly relatable, so justified in their meme status, they change the internet forever.

Introducing Moo Deng; the viral pygmy hippo that’s been delighting timelines for the past few weeks… and with good reason.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll no doubt be familiar with this glorious, sleek hippopotamid.

She’s playful, she’s funny, and she’s absolutely furious.

Moo Deng lives in Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo. Born in July of this year, she quickly gained popularity (notoriety?) after videos of her running around her enclosure went viral on Facebook.

Moo Deng, which translates to ‘bouncy pig’ or ‘bouncy pork’, isn’t just any normal pygmy hippo. She’s a feisty pygmy hippo.

She’s cute but she will bite. She’s funny but she takes no prisoners. She’s adorable but she will scream and shout if you attempt to pick her up, wash her, or… basically do anything Moo Deng doesn’t want to do.

So far has Moo Deng’s popularity reached that the Khao Kheow zoo has started selling Moo Deng merch and restricting Moo Deng visitors to five minutes per person.

There are Moo Deng makeup trends on TikTok, Moo Deng BitCoin, and a 24 livestream so you can watch Moo Deng at your leisure, attempting to walk up a slant, sleeping, or just being a slippery lil cutie.

But as with all good things that are parodied on Saturday Night Live, they must come to an end.

Moo Deng is growing up. Soon, she won’t be small, her ears will be bigger, and she may even (God forbid) chill out a bit.

But until that day, let us bask in the slimy glory of this adorable pygmy, project our innermost desires onto her, and live delicious within the Moo Deng supremacy.
