Do you hear that? That’s the sound of hearts breaking everywhere, as This Is Us has announced that the sixth season of the show will be the last and that it’s time to say goodbye to the Pearson family.

But it’s not all bad, as the final episodes of season five are yet to air – we’re all waiting patiently thanks to the delays. There are a few questions to be answered, like who pulled up to the house when the whole family was there with Rebecca? Let’s hope season six ties up everything, leaving no stone unturned.

But as it turns out, season six was also meant to be the final season.

Showrunner Dan Fogelman revealed back in 2019 that, in his vision for the show, it would only ever run for six seasons in total. In his eyes, the whole story wraps up nicely at that point.

“We never set out to make a television series that was going to last 18 seasons, so we have a very direct plan,” Fogelman told the Hollywood Reporter. “I have script pages I have written and I’m writing that really are deep, deep, deep into the future. We have a plan for what we’re going to do, and I know what the plan is.”

At least we have a while yet to enjoy the Pearsons, and Chrissy Metz, who plays Kate, revealed that the whole cast is “distraught” over it, so it might not be the very end.

“Who knows? There might be a spin-off,” she said in an interview with NBC in January of this year “Who knows? Dan might say, ‘Oh, maybe let’s go season 7.’ Who knows? Listen, we haven’t even finished season 5, so I have to stay in today.”

No matter what happens, at least we know that season six is gonna be BIG, and there’ll likely be plenty of tears.
