Harry Styles Says His Debut Single Sign Of The Times Is About Childbirth And We’re Confused, Very Confused

He dropped the track earlier this month.

When Harry Styles told Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw that the lyrics from his debut single Sign Of The Times were “personal” we assumed he was talking about his feelings on a previous relationship. (Cough. Taylor Swift. Cough.)

But according to Harry himself, that simply ain’t so because the song is actually about childbirth.

Confused? So are we.

“The song is written from a point of view as if a mother was giving birth to a child and there’s a complication,” Harry told Rolling Stone.

“The mother is told, ‘The child is fine, but you’re not going to make it’. The mother has five minutes to tell the child, ‘Go forth and conquer’.”

Um, okay, then, but don’t just take Harry’s word for it. Here are the lyrics. Can you spot a bit of a theme going on?

Just stop your crying, it’s a sign of the times
Welcome to the final show
Hope you’re wearing your best clothes
You can’t bribe the door on your way to the sky
You look pretty good down here
But you ain’t really good…
We never learn, we been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets? The bullets
We never learn, we been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets? The bullets
We don’t talk enough, we should open up
Before it’s all too much
