Is Yours On The List? WhatsApp Is About To Stop Working On LOADS Of Phones
'This was a tough decision for us to make.'
It’s tough to remember life before WhatsApp, the messaging service which has made texting, group messaging, calling, voice messages and photo-sharing simple and – for the most part – free.
We definitely take it for granted, so we were just a *little* panicked to hear that the app will soon no longer work on a large variety of old smartphone models, among them certain Apple and Android devices. The stoppage will happen in phases, with the first coming as soon as next month.
WhatsApp says its a necessary move to allow the app to grow and develop new tech-led features. “While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future,” the folks at HQ said in a statement.
“This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp.”
Wondering if your phone is getting the cold shoulder? Here’s the list so far.
From January 2017, support for WhatsApp will be cut off on phones running the following (or lower):
- Windows Phone 7
- Android 2.1
- Android 2.2
- iOS 6
And by June 30th, 2017, the following operating services (or lower) will also be unable to run WhatsApp:
- BlackBerry OS
- BlackBerry 10
- Nokia S40
- Nokia Symbian S60
Time to upgrade your phone…
