It Looks Like The Irish Will Dominate The Oscars Again This Year
Sure, we're only delighted!
Forget about Hollywood!
Ireland is the place to be for talent as it looks like we’ll be dominating once again during award season.
US entertainment publication Variety has taken a look at all the films that could be nominated in the coming months.
And there are plenty of Irish names being thrown around. And we couldn’t be more delighted!
The publication predicts that Cillian Murphy will receive his first Oscar nomination for his performance in Oppenheimer in the Leading Actor category.
Yes, you read that right, Cillian has never been nominated for an Academy Award!
Andrew Scott has also been tipped to nab a nomination in this category for his role in All of Us Strangers which comes out on 26th January 2024. This would be the Fleabag star’s first nomination as well.
Barry Keoghan is among the names being thrown around in the 2024 Best Actor nominations for his role in Saltburn. That film is due out on 17th November.
Barry is no stranger to the award circuit as he was nominated last year for his role in The Banshees of Inisherin, while he missed out on an Academy Award, he did win a BAFTA.
Michael Fassbender could also be nominated in the Best Actor category for The Killer that hits Netflix on November 10th.
There’ll be no space for anyone else!
It’s no surprise that Paul Mescal’s name has been bandied about when talking about award season. He has been tipped to be nominated for his role in All of Us Strangers alongside Andrew Scott. He would be up for Best Supporting Actor.
Don’t worry, it’s not just the lads who are getting praise for their acting skills.
Saoirse Ronan has also been tipped to be nominated for her role in Foe alongside Paul Mescal in the Best Actress category.
Saoirse has been nominated for an Academy Award four times already for Atonement, Brooklyn, Lady Bird, and Little Women but has yet to win one!
Jessie Buckley is another contender who could shake up the category thanks to her role in the upcoming film, Fingernails. The flick will hit Apple TV+ on November 3rd.
Eve Hewson, who has become a household name thanks to Bad Sisters, has also been tipped to be nominated in the Best Actress category for her new film Flora and Son.
It’s not just in the acting category that Flora and Son could pick up some nominations. The publication has said that writer-director John Carney could possibly pick up a nomination for Best Original Screenplay category.
Poor Things, a film which is produced by Irish company Element Pictures, is predicted to pick up multiple Oscar nominations in January. And we would only be delighted.
The film has already garnered attention around the globe and picked up the Best Picture award at the Venice Film Festival.
The film is expected to be nominated for Best Picture, Best Director for Yorgos Lanthimos, and Best Actress for Emma Stone. Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan has also been tipped to be nominated.
In the documentary category Netflix documentary The Deepest Breath and Disney+’s Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, with David Letterman, are also making waves.
The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 23rd with the ceremony taking place on March 10th. Watch this space!
