Lizzo’s Legal Drama Over Truth Hurts Just Got Messier

A never-ending saga in music business drama.

Lizzo has become further embroiled in a legal dispute over her chart-topping track ‘Truth Hurts’, as songwriters Justin and Jeremiah Raisen and Justin “Yves” Rothman have countersued the pop starlet over claims they wrote excerpts of her hit song.

In October of last year, Lizzo filed a lawsuit against the songwriters, asking for a judge to declare that the team had no claim to the much-loved track. Now, the Raisen brothers and Rothman have filed a countersuit arguing that they worked on another unreleased track with Lizzo, who then used some of the lyrics in her song ‘Truth Hurts,’ for which they have not received credit.

Specifically, the songwriters claim that they are responsible for penning everybody’s favourite Lizzo line of all time; the iconic opening lyric “I just took a DNA test, turns out, I’m 100% that bitch.”

Without their contribution, the Raisens and Rothman claim that Lizzo never would have hit the big-time with ‘Truth Hurts’, or won a Grammy Award for best pop solo performance of the hit song. According to their countersuit claims, Lizzo acted in “bad faith, [and her failure to credit is an] unprincipled attempt to deny songwriting and producer credits and royalties.”

We’re sure this isn’t the last we’ll be hearing about this music feud. Sometimes, the truth really does hurt.
