People Are Pretty Pissed That Emily In Paris Received Golden Globe Nominations

Here's why

Earlier this week the nominations for the Golden Globe Awards were announced. Emily In Paris, the show that much of the nation ‘hate-watched’ their way through late last year, was up for two nominations, those being ‘Best TV Series’ and ‘Best Actress’.

Admittedly we all reveled in the mindless entertainment Emily In Paris provided us with, in a year that was one of the toughest in recent history, we appreciated being transported to a land where social distancing didn’t exist, and a 22-year-old can make it big in a French Marketing Agency with little to no French. But, many viewers of the show are still unhappy with its prestigious nominations, and here’s why.

While Emily In Paris received nominations, many other shows, which fans reckon are extremely worthy, did not.

There has been a particular focus on the show I May Destroy You, produced and starred by Michaela Coel. The show focuses on the topic of sexual assault, showcasing how the main character deals with her complex trauma. Despite receiving high praise, it has not been nominated for a Golden Globe, and fans are pretty cheesed off about that.

Also cheesed off about that is Deborah Copaken, writer of Emily In Paris, who tweeted her frustration to Michaela saying:

Dear @MichaelaCoel: I was a writer on Emily in Paris, but your show was my favorite show since the dawn of TV, & this is just wrong”

“I loved I MAY DESTROY YOU, and I thank you, personally, for giving us your heart, your mind, your resilience, & your humor.”

Deborah went on to speak more about the snub, explaining to The Guardian that she believes this is a bigger issue. Many social media users have highlighted the idea that the unjust is a problem bigger than just a nomination snub, saying that it highlights the racist undertones that pins much of western society.

Going on to speak about her own nomination for Emily In Paris, she explained that while she was happy, her overriding feeling lies with the disappointment of Michaela’s snub.

“Now, am I excited that Emily in Paris was nominated? Yes. Of course. I’ve never been remotely close to seeing a Golden Globe statue up close, let alone being nominated for one. But that excitement is now unfortunately tempered by my rage over Coel’s snub”

“That I May Destroy You did not get one Golden Globe nod is not only wrong, it’s what is wrong with everything.”
