Ruth Negga Has Just Scored An OSCAR Nomination For Loving!
She's up for Best Actress on February 26th.
The nominations for the 89th annual Academy Awards were announced this afternoon, and we have ourselves an Irish hopeful for Best Actress in the form of Ruth Negga.
Ruth’s nominated for her role in Loving, the biopic of Mildred and Richard Loving, who took a court case against the state of Virginia in 1967 after their inter-racial marriage was deemed illegal.
After being nominated for Best Actress at the Golden Globes, Ruth was hotly tipped to score a nomination today too, despite missing out on nods for the BAFTAs and Screen Actors’ Guild awards. She’s up against Isabelle Huppert, Natalie Portman, Emma Stone and Meryl Streep for the coveted gong.
It’s been a busy six months for the former Love/Hate star, who has been doing the US chat show circuit in the run-up to awards season, as well appearing on the cover of US Vogue. As you do.
Other Irish names tipped for Oscar success this year were writer and director John Carney for Sing Street, costume designer Consolata Boyle for her work on Florence Foster Jenkins, cinematographer Seamus McGarvey for Nocturnal Animals, and the short film The Lobster starring Colin Farrell and produced by Element Pictures.
Both Consolata and The Lobster took home nominations today, giving us a grand total of three Irish Oscar hopefuls this year. Not too shabby!
