Sophie Turner Has Slammed An Article That Called Priyanka Chopra And Nick Jonas’ Marriage A ‘Scam’
"This is wildly inappropriate and totally disgusting."
As you might have heard, actress Priyanka Chopra and singer Nick Jonas got married in a multi-day ceremony in India over the weekend.
The wedding has been the talk of the internet for weeks now, and their whirlwind relationship has been the subject of much fascination since it was unveiled early this year. Yesterday, US website The Cut published an article exploring the Chopra/Jonas relationship, asking ‘Is Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s Love For Real?’
The article refers to Priyanka as a “global scam artist”, suggests that she “trapped” Nick to further her career, and claims that the couple’s lavish wedding felt “fake”.
At times, marriage can be a beautifully wonderful union that warms even the coldest of hearts, but sadly, this union evokes no such feeling. All Nick wanted was a possible fling with Hollywood’s latest It Woman, but instead he wound up staring straight at a life sentence with a global scam artist.
It was probably meant to be tongue-in-cheek, and Priyanka and Nick’s romance did sort of came out of the blue, but the piece has sparked a huge backlash on Twitter.
People have called the article racist, sexist, and xenophobic in its portrayal of a “gold-digging” Indian woman marrying a “young, innocent” Western man.
I'm hoping that this is just a tongue and cheek article and not meant to be serious. If not, then you are consumed with racist, sexist and xenophobic hatred. The gold-digging Indian woman is trying to steal the virtue of the young innocent White boy trope is cringe-worthy. SMH

Holy fuck, @TheCut. How many people did you set out to offend with this terrible, culturally ignorant, and flat-out bilious piece? https://t.co/CvSPf4lFUY

Others pointed out that Priyanka was already a massive Bollywood star (a huge film industry in its own right) before she even arrived in the US, so the idea that the marriage would further her career doesn’t really ring true. Plus, she’s arguably a bigger star than her husband at the moment.
Fellow Bollywood actors weighed in on the piece, along with Priyanka and Nick’s sister-in-law, Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner:
Depressed with the state of the world & current affairs? Hereβs some good olβ fashioned puerile filth published by @TheCut 2 add some pointless venom 2 ur day. Also someone invite @mRiah to an Indian wedding πππ Might assuage some of her misguided angst! #yellowjournalism https://t.co/3q8cPMElrp

The piece was edited to remove all references to ‘scams’ before being deleted altogether and replaced with an apologetic Editor’s Note that said the story “did not meet our standards”.
Priyanka and Nick have not yet commented on the article (probably too busy enjoying their first few days of wedded bliss), but it looks like their friends and family have their backs.
