Can you believe it’s been a whole year since season four of Stranger Things hit our screens? We certainly can’t, it feels like we’ve been waiting years for the release of the final season of our favourite science fiction drama, but we can’t deny it’s been for a good reason.

Unfortunately for fans of the popular Netflix show, production was paused back in June due to the WGA writers strike and the SAG-ASTRA strike. But as of September 2023, it seems things are back in action for the gang from Hawkins.

It was announced on September 25th that the Writer’s Guild of America had finally reached a deal that should hopefully see the writer’s strike end soon.

Only two days later did we get the news we were all waiting for… Stranger Things writers took to Twitter with a simple and exciting message, “we’re back”.

So, what can we expect from the fifth and final season? Well, it seems like one particular character will play a very important role this season. Will Byers’ story arc will be one for the ages and according to the Duffer Brothers will be the one to bring the whole series together.

Chatting to Variety, Ross Duffer said: “Will really takes centre stage again in [season] 5. This emotional arc for him is what we feel is going to hopefully tie the whole series together. Will is used to being the young one, the introverted one, the one that’s being protected. So part of his journey, it’s not just sexuality – it’s Will coming into his own as a young man.”

According to the Duffers we will also learn a lot more about the Upside Down, they said: “The only thing we don’t delve into in [season 4] volume 2 is Upside Down lore. We hint at it. I’m sure someone on Reddit will be able to maybe piece it together, but a lot of those answers for the Upside Down or that is really what the basis of season 5 is about.”

The brothers told SFX, they know what the ending of the hit show will be and they couldn’t be more excited to play it out on screen. They said: “It’s conceivable that it changes, but I think it’s unlikely because it’s one of those endings that just feels, and has always felt, right. And it also feels sort of inevitable. Then when you come up with it, you’re like, ‘oh yeah well, that is absolutely what it has to be.'”

Unfortunately due to the pause in production as a result of the WGA and SAG-ASTRA strikes, it looks like we won’t be seeing season five headed to our screens until late 2024 or even early 2025. But here’s hoping we’re wrong.

Fingers crossed!
