Below Deck Down Under’s Harry Van Vliet on Romance, Drama, & Proving Himself
“My parents put me on a sailboat when I was six, and I’ve worked my way up ever since"
The highly anticipated third season of Below Deck Down Under is in full swing, and we had the opportunity to catch up with fan favourite Harry Van Vliet to talk about all the highs, lows, and unexpected moments.
Returning for his second season alongside Captain Jason Chambers, Harry opened up about the challenges he’s faced, the new crew dynamics, and of course, the boatmance drama that’s heating up the charter season.
A Rollercoaster Ride
Describing this season as a “rollercoaster”, Harry admitted that while he started strong, an early injury threatened to shorten his time on board. “I hurt my thumb, which was a big down. No one wants a deckhand on board who can’t get wet,” he said.
Determined to push through, he adapted by helping in other departments, even offering to assist the interior crew to prove his will power. “I want to show Jason I’ve got what it takes to be a captain one day.”

Crew Chemistry
Season 3 introduces a mix of fresh new faces and returning crew, and Harry gave us insight into how the team meshed. While he bonded with most of his fellow crewmates, he admitted there were some tensions, particularly with past chef Tzarina and new sous chef Anthony.
“I tried to get to know Anthony, but he just didn’t really give me much. I don’t think the position was right for him,” he shared. With a new sous chef coming in, Harry hinted that there’s plenty of drama to unfold in the galley.
Navigating New Challenges
Beyond new crew dynamics, the boat itself posed unique challenges. Unlike most yachts, this one lacked exterior walkways, making movement more difficult for the stew staff. “This boat’s unique. The saloon goes edge-to-edge, which means way more interior space but a nightmare for the crew. The stairs are brutal. Jason always says we’re all going to have big legs by the end of the season,” he laughed.

Boatmances and Unexpected Connections
If there’s one thing Below Deck fans love, it’s the boatmance drama, and this season does not disappoint. Harry revealed that romance is a major theme, even calling it the most “romantic” season yet. One particular moment that shocked him (and fans)? Fellow deckhand Wihan’s ever evolving love interests.
“When he told me he was into Adair after kissing Marina and Tzarina, I was like how many chicks does this guy want to kiss on this boat?” he joked.
As for his own romantic storyline, Harry wasn’t shy about discussing his connection with Brianna. “She’s beautiful, and I knew if I didn’t make a move, someone else would. So, I just went for it and it paid off.”
A Special Bond with Captain Jason
Having worked under Captain Jason’s leadership in Season 2, Harry felt more at ease this time around. “He gets me. I get him. It just makes everything easier. We can just say to each other, ‘Let’s do it this way,’ and we’re on the same page.”
The two share more than just a professional connection, they’re both from the same small town in Australia. “He’s like a dad to me,” Harry added. (So sweet!)
Drama on the Horizon
For fans wondering if the biggest moments have already aired, Harry assured us there’s plenty more to come. “We’ve seen thumbs come off, jet skis get rolled, and boatmance drama but trust me, that’s not all. There’s still a lot more ahead.” (And for the fans wondering, his thumb is doing so much better, nail and all!)

A Future Captain in the Making?
Beyond the season’s chaos, Harry remains head on focused with his long term goal of becoming a captain. “My parents put me on a sailboat when I was six, and I’ve worked my way up ever since. I’m doing my yachtmaster courses now, just taking it step by step.”
With his determination and love for the industry, we wouldn’t be surprised to see him at the helm of his own yacht one day!
For now fans will have to stay tuned to see how the rest of the season unfolds (we don’t know about you but we’re so excited). But one thing’s for sure, Harry Van Vliet is just getting started.
