Dr Alex George stole the nation’s heart on the 2018 series of Love Island.

Now the A&E doctor has joined ITV once again taking a seat on the channel’s mental health advisory board.

Speaking about his new role on Susannah Constantine’s podcast My Wardrobe Malfunction, Alex said:

“I actually sit on the board now, a mental health advisory board for ITV and a lot of the thoughts now moving forward are around how can we promote a better mental wellbeing, not just the people on the show but the people watching it.”

Dr Alex describes his Love Island experience as a ‘rollercoaster.’ The show messaged him on Instagram to take part when he had just 200 followers!

“I mean to go from someone who had no experience in the public eye, no media experience at all, to being centre of a lot of focus and attention. I think that was a huge shock and a massive thing to get used to,” Dr Alex said.

Continuing, the 30-year-old said that reality TV can have a positive affect on people’s mental health if it done the right way.

“If we think about it and we consider these things when making these shows, considering who you’re putting on there: Are they prepared for that, what messages are we giving to people? Are we representing the body image? The diversity that we have in the UK on screen, those kinds of things.

“I’ll be interested to see what the cast is like on this year on Love Island, but I suspect we might see a better diversity, I hope in all sorts of ways on the show this year.”

Perhaps Dr Alex’s hope for better diversity on Love Island will come through. As for the first time ever the show is accepting LGBTQ+ applications.

The much-loved reality show is expected to return on Sunday 27th of June and run for 8 weeks until the end of August. Our very own Laura Whitmore is set to host this year’s show.

This year’s contestants are yet to be announced but rumours are circulating including Gordon Ramsey’s daughter.

After the cancellation of last year’s show due to the pandemic, we cannot wait for all things sun, relationships and of course a little drama!
