The Viral RIP.ie Comment Might Be The Most Irish Dating Story Ever

The most unexpected love story on the internet right now is happening on RIP.ie

Every so often, a story goes viral that feels almost too Irish to be real. This one involves an old flame, a condolence message, a Roscommon nightclub and, somehow, RIP.ie becoming the country’s most unexpected dating platform.

Yes, really.

Over the past few days, a condolence message on RIP.ie has gone viral. For anyone unfamiliar, RIP.ie is the Irish website used for death notices and funeral arrangements, which makes the fact a man from Roscommon appeared to use its comments section to reconnect with an old flame from decades ago all the more bizarre.

Naturally, such an unusual way of reaching out has left people laughing, but also slightly divided. Some people were horrified by the timing, others were fully behind the hustle, and plenty also seemed caught on the fact that despite the absurd nature of it all, there was something strangely sincere about the whole thing.

And maybe that is why it has been received so well on the internet.

Because yes, using RIP.ie to hit up your ex is objectively unhinged. There is surely no dating coach in the country that recommends sliding into the condolences section with a romantic follow-up. It is slightly awkward, badly timed, deeply chaotic, but also very Irish.

The specificity of it all. The Roscommon references, the old nightclub mention, the “no mobile phones at that time” explanation, the memory of a romance from decades ago being revived in the most inappropriate online setting possible. It is ridiculous, but it is also strangely endearing.

In a dating culture now dominated by dating apps, ghosting, situationships and people trying their best to appear “nonchalant”, there is something almost shocking about someone genuinely acting on their feelings even if it risks embarrassment.

Was it the right place? Definitely not.

Was it subtle? Hell no.

But was it honest? Absolutely.

And maybe this is the part that people responding to. Modern dating has made people terrified of appearing too invested. We are told not to double text, reply too fast, and definitely not make the first move in a way that it can be screenshotted and shared around the internet.

Then comes this man on RIP.ie, remembering someone he dated decades ago, admitting he still thinks about her after all these years, and leaving his number in the most unexpected place imaginable.

It sits somewhere between wildly inappropriate, strangely brave and accidentally romantic in the most Irish way possible.

Because underneath the madness of it all, there is something oddly old-fashioned about the gesture. It belongs to a world before dating apps and Instagram stalking. When losing contact with someone meant you really may never again hear about that person.

No messages or camera roll to look back on. Just memories.

So yes, the RIP.ie comment is funny. Obviously, it is. But it also says something about how much dating has changed.

In 2026, sincerity can feel more shocking than the actual setting.

Not Tinder. Not Hinge. RIP.ie.

Only in Ireland.
