Unpacking The Latest Chappell Roan Controversy
"I do not hate children"
Another day, another Chappell Roan fan interaction that has left the internet feeling a little bit spicy.
The ‘Red Wine Supernova’ singer was headlining Lollapalooza festival in São Paulo over the weekend—but before all of that, she was having breakfast in her hotel when a member of security seemingly “berated” an 11-year-old fan.
The fan in question happened to be the stepdaughter of footballer Jorginho, who had received tickets to see Chappell for her birthday.
She is also the daughter of Irish singer Catherine Harding, who was in the hotel during the incident in question, and Harding’s ex Jude Law, who was, of course, not present.
Still with us? Good.

All of the above kicked off when Jorginho posted to social media, saying that Chappell’s security made his stepdaughter cry, following a “very upsetting situation” in the hotel.
The footballer said that 11-year-old Ada spotted the singer across the room, walked past her smiling, and returned to her table.
“What happened next was completely disproportionate,” he said.
“A large security guard came over to their table while they were still having breakfast and began speaking in an extremely aggressive manner to both my wife and my daughter, saying that she shouldn’t allow my daughter to ‘disrespect’ or ‘harass’ other people.
“He even said he would file a complaint against them with the hotel, while my 11-year-old daughter was sitting there in tears. My daughter was extremely shaken and cried a lot.”
Chappell later responded to the incident saying that she was unaware of the mother and daughter in the room, and that the security in question were not her own “personal security.”

“I was just sitting at breakfast in my hotel…I did not ask the security guard to go up and talk to this mother and child,” she said on Instagram Stories.
“They did not come up to me. They weren’t doing anything. It’s unfair for security to just assume someone doesn’t have good intentions when they have no reason to believe, because there is no action even taken.”
Chappell went on to say that: “I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children, that is crazy.
“I am sorry to the mother and child that someone was assuming something, that you were doing something. If you felt uncomfortable that makes me really sad. You did not deserve that.”
Harding later shared her own experience, saying that she “didn’t know” if the security was on Chappell’s team or not, but that she felt like a “boundary” had been overstepped.
“She literally didn’t do anything, she just looked at her and smiled,” she said of her daughter. “She came back and she actually said to me, ‘Mum, I don’t know if it’s her.’ Because obviously, with her costumes and everything, she looks a little bit different.”

Catherine went on to say that she and her daughter didn’t attend the festival in the end.
“You have a responsibility when you are a celebrity that the people who work for you and act on your behalf are acting on your behalf,” she said.
‘Would he do that if he didn’t have her authority? I don’t know. If he does, that’s a big problem because then he is representing her in a way she doesn’t want to be represented.”
In response, Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere later said that Roan was “banned” from playing the city’s Todo Mundo festival.
The incident comes after a series of reports of the singer emphasising that she does not like to be approached by fans in public, nor does she enjoy being recognised when she is not performing.
Back in 2024 she shared a series of TikToks criticising “creepy” and “entitled” fans for their behaviour. “If you saw a random woman on the street, would you yell at her from your car window?” she said.
“Would you harass her in public? Would you go up to a random lady and say, ‘Can I take a photo with you?’ and she says ‘No, what the fuck?’ and then you get mad at this random lady?”
