Wicked The Musical Is Getting A Film Adaptation Set For Release Next Year
The Tony award-winning Broadway musical is coming to the big screen.
Wicked the movie, based off the musical we all know and dearly love is getting a Hollywood makeover and we cannot bloody wait.
As if the soundtrack isn’t something to have you feeling buzzed already with songs like Defying Gravity, Popular and One Short Day, then surely the news that a director has come on board will get you excited for what’s to come.
Announced at the beginning of this month, Joh M Chu, the man behind Crazy Rich Asians, Step Up 2: The Streets, and the upcoming movie version of musical In the Heights, is set to lead the show down the yellow brick road.
Breaking the news on Twitter, Chu shared his excitement to be joining the production – one that has hit many false starts due to the coronavirus pandemic and explained that casting is now underway.
Sharing the news of his role next to the announcement that the show is back on the road and ready to begin finding their stars, Chu teased: “So… who wants to be Elphaba and Glinda?”
“Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It’s time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes and leap…”#WickedMovie @UniversalPics #StephenSchwartz #WinnieHolzman #MarcPlatt it’s time.
So… Twitterverse, who should we cast? pic.twitter.com/ZaAeAJTq9f— Jon M. Chu (@jonmchu) February 2, 2021
Our minds go into overdrive thinking of who could potentially play these roles, but we’re sure we’ll be very pleased.
Explaining that the Wicked musical was always one of his faves, Chu expressed his excitement to be leading the directing and expressed it being similar to getting the invite “to Oz by the Wizard himself.”
Wicked the movie was originally set for release this December, but it has now been postponed and looks ready to take the cinema stage next year, in early 2022.
