Your Comprehensive Guide To The Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker ‘Feud’
BRB, weeping at our crushed dreams of Carrie and Samantha being BFFs for life.
Sex And The City fans have been watching aghast over the past few weeks as stars Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker had it out in the press. Samantha and Carrie? Not BFFs IRL? It’s too much to take.
While the so-called feud between the two actresses has intensified as of late, if reports are to be believed it has actually been going on for over a decade. So what’s gone down between the two of them? Here’s a complete timeline.
2004: Sex And The City wraps up after six seasons – the first film is in development, but is delayed due to salary negotiations. Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Davis sit together at the Emmys, while Kim Cattrall sits away by herself. Hmm.
In an interview with Jonathan Ross, she alludes to money problems between the cast: “I felt after six years it was time for all of us to participate in the financial windfall of Sex And The City. When they didn’t seem keen on that, I thought it was time to move on.”
2008: The first film finally comes out. The Telegraph reveals that Kim tried to negotiate a raise for herself after SJP got an executive producer title on the show, which caused a rift to form between her and the rest of the cast. Kim says quite plainly that she and SJP are not the “best of friends”.
2009-2010: Then the time comes to promote the second film and all of that is promptly forgotten. “I don’t think anybody wants to believe that I don’t love Kim,” says SJP. “I think Sarah is fantastic. She is a born leader and she guides the crew and the cast in such a strong but gentle way,” says Kim. They both agree that they are sick of people saying they don’t get on.
September 2017: All is quiet for few years, other than a few reports on Kim and SJP not speaking any more. Rumblings begin that a third Sex And The City movie was scrapped after Kim refused to take part unless Warner Bros produced other films she had in development. Kim herself refuted this claim, saying she didn’t want to do a third film at all:
Woke 2 a @MailOnline 💩storm! The only 'DEMAND' I ever made was that I didn't want to do a 3rd film….& that was back in 2016

October 2017: SJP confirms that yep, there was a third SATC film in development, and she’s terribly disappointed that they won’t get to tell the “beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, joyful, very relatable story”. Co-star Kristin Davis backs her up on Instagram, saying it’s “deeply frustrating” that the film was shelved.
Meanwhile, Kim appears on Piers Morgan’s chat show and says she’s finished playing Samantha Jones: “This isn’t about more money. It’s not about more scenes. This is about a clear decision, an empowered decision in my life to end one chapter and start another… It’s a great part. I played it past the finish line and then some, and I loved it.”
She also says SJP “could have been nicer” about her decision. Oof.
February 1-4, 2018: SJP tells US TV host Andy Cohen that she was “heartbroken” to hear that Kim didn’t consider her a friend. The same week, Kim’s brother sadly passed away – SJP sent her condolences on Instagram, to which Kim responded:
I don’t need your love and support at this tragic time, Sarah Jessica Parker… My mom asked me today, “When will that Sarah Jessica Parker, that hypocrite, leave you alone?” Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now. Let me make this very clear (if I haven’t already): You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona.
February 23, 2018: In a truly eyebrow-raising moment, actor Jason Lewis – who played Samantha’s hunky beau Smith Jerrod – reveals that he is siding with SJP:

Listen, I have to say that Sarah was always just so lovely and such a consummate professional and I think that people should remember their graciousness and the things that have been given to them. And I’m going to stop there. Because I’ve got nothing good to say.
Yikes.
Yesterday: Cynthia Nixon posts an Instagram photo of her and SJP on a photoshoot together. Is this a sign that she’s picked a ‘team’? Everyone seems to think so.
Phew. We don’t know about you, but we’re absolutely exhausted. The saddest thing is that SATC fans have to do something they never thought possible: Decide if they’re Team Samantha or Team Carrie. It’s all just too much 🙁
