Dressing for cold autumn days is all about figuring out how to stay warm, comfortable, and cosy, yet still look cute at the same time. The key? Whether you’re dressing for work, the weekend or a casual night out, it’s all about a warm layering strategy, so we asked our fashion editor Linda Conway for some key tips for layering up during the chilly season ahead.
Keep it light
“Light layering is key for cosy comfort without looking like the Michelin man,” Linda explains. “Think a light vest top, shirt, fine knit, and a jacket.” A pro tip? “When opting for a chunky knit, your sleek fitting coat won’t cut it, so to avoid a bulging coat invest in a cape, and layer until your heart’s content.” Got it.
Don’t forget accessories
Accessories don’t just maketh the outfit, they’re also pretty ace at keeping you warm. “Accessories like scarfs and gloves are the snuggly options that you can pop in your bag and whip out when the temperature drops,” suggests Linda. Keep ’em stashed in your tote so you can layer on the go.
Don’t forget your thermals
“When the temperatures go WAY down, you’ll wish you listened to your mother,” Linda warns, so the fix is to wear thermals. Reckon they’re only something your gran would wear? No so, says Linda. “Thermals can be hidden, therefore they can be stylish. Being blue from the cold however, is not.” We hear ya.
Be on trend
Naturally, this season’s trends lend themselves perfectly to being snuggly and warm. In particular Linda recommends turtles necks as an easy way to stay on trend and cosy this autumn. Pop one on under a light knit or a waterfall gillet for a flattering way to keep warm.
