Ben Affleck Reveals That His Biggest Regret Is His Divorce From Jennifer Garner

Their divorce was finalised in 2018.

Back in the day, one of our favourite Hollywood couples were Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. So we were a bit devo when they split up back in 2015, and in 2018. Now, Ben has opened up about the split, saying it’s his “biggest regret”.

In an interview with The New York Times, Ben shared, “The biggest regret of my life is this divorce. Shame is really toxic. There is no positive byproduct of shame. It’s just stewing in a toxic, hideous feeling of low self-worth and self-loathing.”

Ben Affleck tried to drink away the pain. Now he’s trying honesty. “People with compulsive behavior, and I am one, have this kind of basic discomfort all the time that they’re trying to make go away,” @benaffleck told us. “You’re trying to make yourself feel better with eating or drinking or sex or gambling or shopping or whatever. But that ends up making your life worse. Then you do more of it to make that discomfort go away. Then the real pain starts. It becomes a vicious cycle you can’t break. That’s at least what happened to me.” To read more — about his addictive behavior, his divorce and why he lied about that back tattoo — tap the link in our bio. @magdawosinskastudio took this photo.

He then went on to talk about his alcohol addiction, which he’s been quite open about for a while now. “I drank relatively normally for a long time. What happened was that I started drinking more and more when my marriage was falling apart. This was 2015, 2016. My drinking, of course, created more marital problems,” he said. “I wish it didn’t happen. I really wish it wasn’t on the internet for my kids to see. Jen and I did our best to address it and be honest.”

Although Ben is looking back on the past, he also said he doesn’t want to dwell on it too much. “It’s not particularly healthy for me to obsess over the failures – the relapses – and beat myself up,” he said. “I have certainly made mistakes. I have certainly done things that I regret. But you’ve got to pick yourself up, learn from it, learn some more, try to move forward.”
