You probably know journalist Donie O’Sullivan for his reporting on geopolitical events and current affairs, but as it turns out, he is the new mastermind of surprise engagements.

While working on news network CNN for its New Year’s Eve show, Donie ran into an Irish couple, Danielle Ó Reannacháin and her boyfriend Oisín Daly, on holliers in the Big Apple. Oisín confessed to Donie that he was planning to propose.

So Donie played wingman and arranged for the special moment to happen on the New Year’s Eve programme.

Donie began doing a standard interview with the couple about their trip and then asked Oisín, “Do you love her?”

This gave Oisín the perfect opportunity to pop the question saying, “I love her so much, I would just like to do a special thing… Danielle, would you like to marry me?”

Danielle said yes, and the champagne was poured.

Donie’s co-hosts for the evening Andy Cohen of The Real Housewives fame and American journalist Anderson Cooper, were shocked by the engagement and thrilled for the happy couple as they clapped and smiled at seeing the proposal.

Of course, it isn’t all magical proposals for Donie. He is straight back into his work and even has a new RTÉ show coming out tonight.

Donie O’Sullivan: Capitol Man will follow Donie’s journey from growing up in a small town in Kerry to moving to the US reporting on the 2021 Capitol Insurrection. You can tune in at 9:30pm on RTÉ 1.
