Nicola Coughlan Has Opened Up About Losing Her Dad Days Before Landing Derry Girls Part

"There’s just that one person that never got to know..."

Nicola Coughlan has opened up about experience a huge high and heartbreaking low at the same time.

While landing the part of Clare in Derry Girls was a dream come true for the actress, she had said goodbye to her dad just days before.

“I lost my dad and five days later I got Derry Girls,” the Galway star said.

“So it has been very weird because I’ve had such crazy blessings, and I am the most grateful person, I know how lucky I am.”

She added that her success has been bittersweet because she doesn’t get to share it with her dad.

“It’s a weird one. Because there’s all these wonderful things, there’s just that one person that never got to know. In a weird way it really makes me count my blessings because there are so many heart-breaking things in life, you have to appreciate the good times,” she told Metro.

“And I just know how much he would have loved all of this, especially, the fancy stuff, that would have been right up his street.”

She previously told Hot Press: “He knew I wanted the role more than anything I’d wanted before, so he’d have been thrilled for me.”

If you have yet to see Nicola as the wonderful wee Clare on the show, the first season is landing on Netflix this month! So get on that!
