Rihanna is a proud Barbadian and is constantly sharing her love for her island and home country. And now, Barbados is sending some love right back as they have made Rihanna a member of the Order of National Heroes.

Rihanna was given the honour during a celebration of the country successful transition to a republic as the island nation swore in its first president Dame Sandra Mason. Meaning the British royal family is no longer the head of state of Barbados.

During a celebration in the nation’s capital Bridgetown, Prime Minister Mia Mottley made the surprise announcement.

She said, “On behalf of a grateful nation, but an even prouder people, we therefore present to you the designee for national hero for Barbados, ambassador Robyn Rihanna Fenty. May you continue to shine like a diamond and bring honour to your nation by your works, by your actions.”

Rihanna, who had no idea she would be given this honour, was touched by the Prime Minister’s speech and put her hand on her heart during it.

This isn’t the first time Riri has been honoured by her country. In 2008, former prime minister David Thompson declared the 22nd of February “Rihanna Day”. Although not a bank holiday, it is celebrated every year. And in 2018, Rihanna was bestowed with the honorary title of Ambassador for Culture and Youth in Barbados.
