Tom Hanks and his wife Rita took to Instagram yesterday to confirm some sad news: the passing of Tom’s mother, Janet Marylyn Frager.

Janet died this week aged 84, and the Hanks family gathered in California to say their final goodbyes at her funeral.

On social media, Tom kept things simple, penning a short but beautiful tribute to his late mother.

“This beauty? My mom. She was the difference in many lives. Many lives. We say goodbye to her today. Safe crossing, mom! Hanx,” Tom wrote alongside a photo of his mum in her younger days.

He also shared a photo of the State Movie Theatre near his hometown of Concord, California, recalling the “many great movies” he had seen there with his mum and siblings.

Red Bluff, California. Saw many movies here with our Mom. Thanks for all who came to see her off. Hanx

Tom’s wife, actress Rita Wilson, shared an equally touching message, thanking Janet for bringing her “love” into the world and praising the “wonderful lady.”

Rita shared her tribute alongside a recent photo of Tom and his mum, in black-and-white:

As well as Tom, Janet is survived by her three other children: Jim, Sandra and Larry. Her ex-husband, Tom’s father Amos Hanks, passed away in 1992.
