Rachel Sennott Is Working On A Comedy Pilot For HBO – & It’s Just What We Need

There is a Sex and the City shaped hole in all of our lives, and Shiva Baby’s star is likely to fill it in an unconventional manner.

HBO have given the go ahead to a half-hour long comedy pilot written, directed, and starring Rachel Sennott. The brief description we have about the show’s premise will make any fans of Lena Dunham’s Girls giddy with anticipation.

The pilot will follow “a codependent friend group reunion, in which the friends navigate how their time apart, goals and new relationships have changed them.”

If you are anyway familiar with her previous work, you will know that Sennott is a pro at finding humour in the mundane or dark aspects of life.

The honorary Queen of Ireland, Ayo Edebiri, showed her support for her bestie and co-star’s new venture on her Instagram story.

The pair have worked together a number of times, including the creation of two Comedy Central shows, and as awkward best friends in the hilarious Bottoms that came out last year. Sennott was also a writer and executive producer on Bottoms, as well as the horror-comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies.

Sennott and HBO announced this pilot at a really good time for many of us.

Our 20s and 30s are a time when things tend to go wrong more often than they go to plan, and it can be difficult to find media nowadays that truly represent how confusing this period can be.

We all know the false advertising that is social media, and without authentic depictions of the modern woman, it’s only natural to turn to the likes of ‘Trad Wife’ influencers to get a picture of what our life ‘should’ look like. There is a pressure to be perfect that comes with the online world that many are simply sick of.

From the success of writers like Sally Rooney and Dolly Alderton, it’s clear that most people crave a messy, flawed, REAL character; someone with nuance and grit.

With the release of Nicola Coughlan’s Big Mood coming up at the end of March, a series that follows female friendships and mental illness, along with the potential success of this pilot from Sennott, it appears we might be getting this representation and heading into a renaissance of comedies written by women.

And we couldn’t be more excited about it!
