“They Were Supported By Some Young Upstarts Called Westlife” Team STELLAR Share Their First Concert Memories

We're getting nostalgic in STELLAR HQ!

It truly is the season of concerts. There have been some incredible acts flying in to play in Ireland over the last few weeks, with everyone from P!nk to Fleetwood Mac, Bon Jovi, and of course Spice Girls. Westlife is kicking off this weekend and we couldn’t be more excited or feel more nostalgic – which got us chatting about our first ever concert.

Read and cringe…

“My first ever gig was The Backstreet Boys in the RDS, I think I was 11 or 12 and I actually remember what I wore really vividly – a purple crushed velvet shirt with sparkly black hipsters, the absolute GLAMOUR.

“I don’t remember a single moment of the actual gig, but I’m sure I was in raptures over Nick Carter’s curtains.”

Valerie Loftus, Online Editor

“My first ever concert was Boyzone in the RDS in 1999 – they were supported by some young upstarts called Westlife who I didn’t care for much at the time. I was seven years old and could not understand why I wasn’t closer to them, then absolutely BAWLED when they brought fans up on stage during the final song. Literally inconsolable. Mortified my parents. But sure we had a lovely evening!”

“My first concert was Justin Timberlake in the RDS and it was an absolute and total bop! I was probably about 14 and I remember asking my mam could I go with my friends and being SO surprised when she said yes!

“I listened to every single one of his albums on repeat for weeks before and knew the words to every song and it was honestly such a fun night, I still remember it perfectly – he also said the F word and I was mortified… I still have the flashbacks when I hear all the old school JT songs ”

Megan Roantree, Staff Writer

“My first ever concert was the iconic Six. My friend Stephanie and I made a deal with our moms that if we passed our swimming lessons our reward would be seeing Six live.

“I was also rewarded with a new outfit – star printed denim jeans and a purple belly top with sequins. So we headed to Leisure Land in Galway and were pretty blown away by the band, despite the fact that they only had maybe two songs. After they performed There’s A Whole Lotta Lovin’ and… the other one, they changed into some 70s costumes and questionable wigs for a Jackson 5 tribute. I have tried googling this though and found nothing, so I hope I didn’t make it up… I was only about 8.”

“My first concert was Five (or 5ive?) at The Point in Dublin. Ritchie and J had been arrested the night before the gig because they got into a fight with a man in Temple Bar who asked were they members of Westlife. The gig still went ahead though and was as gas and cheesy as you’d expect. 10/10”
