Not too long ago we reported that a Dublin cinema was ranked as one of the most beautiful in the world by Time Out. Coming in at number 16 on a list that included cinemas in Amsterdam, Paris and New York.
So, it should be no surprise to you that the same cinema in question has ranked as number one on a list by the same publication highlighting the best cinemas across Ireland and the UK.
Narrowing it down to 50 cinemas that tick all the boxes when it comes to experience, the Stella Cinema in Rathmines, Dublin 6 has taken the top spot.
The cinema which opened in 1923, was designed by Higginbotham & Stafford and was once one of Ireland’s largest cinemas, seating over 1,200 people in absolute glitz and glamour.

Then, reopening in 2017, after been closed for 13 years, the cinema got a total facelift to transform it back to the way it once looked in the 1920s.
Restoring the original mosaic Stella tilling on the floor, as well as the velvet fabrics, decorative ceiling mouldings and little touches of the time, the Stella is now like going back hundreds of years in a time machine and it’s totally fabulous.

Admitting they were over the moon to be titled number one, the Stella took to social media to share the good news:
“Thank you Time Out for the recognition and moreover, every person who has walked through our doors and supported us, especially over the past few months!
“We have A LOT of exciting plans to come over the next few months and all the team can’t wait to welcome you through our doors very soon!”
The Stella reopened its doors on June 7th in line with government guidelines and we’re thrilled to see them back in action showing both new flicks as well as classics, with a menu that includes cocktails and finger food, as well as cinema goodies.
Other Irish cinemas that made the list included: Phoenix Cinema, Dingle, Kerry, Strand Arts Centre, Belfast, Irish Film Institute, Dublin, Light House Cinema, Dublin and Queen’s Film Theatre, Belfast.
