After an incredible first place win in Men’s 400m Hurdles semi-finals on Wednesday in Rio, Thomas Barr lost out on a bronze medal by just five hundreths of a second yesterday, finishing in fourth place with a time of 47.97 seconds.

Despite not having a podium finish, the 24-year-old Waterford track athelte was in full celebration mode last night.

He started off by changing his Twitter bio to this:

“Didn’t expect it, but that’ll do.”

Then it was time for some preliminary beers:

The runner was joined by his fellow Team Ireland athletes for a few cold ones, among them Cork rower Gary O’Donovan and badminton player Scott Evans:

There was even talk of going topless, from Scott and retired Irish track athlete David Gillick, who’s also in Rio at the moment.

Well, if it can happen in Coppers when it’s lashing rain outside, it can definitely happen in the blistering heat of Rio de Janeiro.

It’s been all silent on the social media front for the last few hours, so we’re guessing Tom and his crew are sleeping off their night of celebrations – though David did post this tweet from Rio in the early hours of the morning:

Pocket tweet, drunken exclamation or total WTF moment? We’re not sure, but we’re guessing it was a good night all round.
