What Is Hopecore, And Why Is It Exactly What We Need?

TikTok is choc-a-bloc with micro trends that we cycle through so rapidly they stop making sense.

We’ve had coastal grandma, Y2k, cottage core, clean girl, and many, many more, all sandwiched between videos that bring about a vague sense of dread.

There’s clips about why you’re doing your make-up wrong; how climate change is destroying the world; what you should do to avoid wrinkles; why your partner is probably cheating on you; a quick explainer of the many wars that are ravaging the world; a go fund me for someone who’s dying; a tutorial to dress in the right colours so you don’t wash yourself out.

Give me a break!

Each night, we doom scroll on this tiny flashing screen that fills our heads with so much overwhelmingly negative information – it’s impossible to process.

And I’m not saying you shouldn’t pay attention to the important things in the world in the right time and space.

(Hint, hint, it’s not whether you’re going to eventually get wrinkly. You are!)

There’s just simply no way it’s good for your brain to receive such an influx of horror and consumerism and bitterness in one swift scroll.

That’s why I’m so thoroughly enjoying one of TikTok’s trends in particular –’hopecore’.

Hopecore is a theme for video and picture compilations that does what it says on the tin; inspires hope!

It’s like a breath of fresh air from the constant commentary that TikTok forces down our throats; instead, it’s compilations of people doing nice things for one another, communities gathering to celebrate something, animals being adorable, and loving messages.

It’s a little cringe, sure – and yes, I am one of those people who used to look up videos of people surprising their families on YouTube so I could have a little cry.

But it’s also so life affirming and important!

When the TikTok overwhelm of pressure and perfection is getting you down, hopecore is a reminder that the world is so much bigger than whether you’re wearing the right thing, or if you did enough recycling last week.

All you can do is your best. And let’s be real, we’re not about to put down our phones to go and touch grass right at this moment.

What we can do…is embrace hopecore!
