Everything We Know About The Upcoming Barbie Movie

Eeeekkkk! It’s finally happening!

Warner Bros.

We’re in the final weeks ’til the brand new Barbie movie hits our screens and we couldn’t be more excited.

The time has come for Margot Robbie to grace our screens in all her pink glory alongside a hunky Ryan Gosling, what more could you want from a movie really?

Mattel, the producers of the iconic doll, have partnered with Warner Bros. to produce the brand new live action version of the film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

Margot will also be producing the film, a multitasker by all accounts much like her titular character, Barbie.

The doll is said to have kept over 200 jobs in her animated universe, a feat not reached by any other.

Speaking to Variety, Margot said: “I think it’s a great opportunity to put some positivity out in the world and a chance to be aspirational for younger kids.”

At long last, the final trailer for the highly anticipated Barbie live action movie has dropped!

And it is just as good as we expected.

The movie will follow Barbie and Ken as they venture outside Barbieland in their pink convertible, only to discover that things in the real world aren’t as pink and perfect as they are back home.

Back on April 4th, a teaser clip was released showing us exactly what Barbieland is like, the fictional town where Barbies and Kens discover all of their amazing talents and win things like the Nobel Peace Prize and become President.

The original teaser announcing the new movie, landed in theatres back in December and was subsequently released on YouTube.

The teaser reveals Margot Robbie dressed as the first-ever Barbie doll, while also playing homage to the Stanley Kubrick film 2001:A Space Odyssey with Richard Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra” scoring the clip.

Margot Robbie was finally cast in the lead role of Barbie back in 2019 after the crew had a difficult time casting Barbie.

The movie was announced back in 2014, with Amy Schumer landing the lead role originally, but due to scheduling issues and creative differences with the crew she dropped out of the movie.

Anne Hathaway was then rumoured to be taking on the lead role before they finally landed on our Barbie, Margot Robbie.

Margot revealed in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar: “I didn’t want to pick up another script where I was the wife or the girlfriend — just a catalyst for the male storyline. It was uninspiring.”

Emma Mackey is confirmed to be playing Barbie as well as Hari Nef, Ritu Arya, Alexandra Shipp, Nicola Coughlan, Sharon Rooney, Kate McKinnon, Ana Cruz Kayne, Dua Lipa, and Issa Rae.

The Sex Education actress was delighted with her new role telling Empire: “It’s great to do comedy because Emily was a sad, dark drama. Barbie is light and funny and silly and American and pink.”

Warner Bros.

Just like Margot Robbie’s Barbie, Ryan Gosling will be joined by a number of other Ken’s including Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans and Ncuti Gatwa to name a few.

In terms of the movie’s soundtrack Dua Lipa released a brand new song this weekend that will appear on the movie soundtrack entitled Dance The Night.

It was also revealed by Rolling Stone that a number of world known artists will be contributing to the movie’s soundtrack including Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, Ava Max, Gayle, Khalid Lizzo, Charli XCX and many more.

The official plot synopsis states: “A doll living in ‘Barbieland’ is expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world.”

So, it seems the movie is going to heavily explore the iconic doll’s journey as ‘less than perfect’, something Barbie has been working on changing for a number of years introducing more diverse dolls in terms of race, size and disability.

When things start to go wrong in Barbieland Barbie grabs her perfect Ken (Ryan Gosling) and escapes to the real world where things go from bad to worse for her – yep it even involves some jail time for punching a guy!

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight Ryan revealed: “I can’t wait for people to see the film. It’s not what you’d expect… That’s all I can say, otherwise, Mattel would come in and box me up..”

The film will be making its way to cinemas on July 21st and we truly can’t wait!
